Free Printable Menu Plan Template for Families
A menu plan on the fridge door ends the daily question of what's for dinner. Here you get a free template as a PDF — a blank weekly page to fill in and a finished example week to start from. Plus the three rules that make a menu plan survive a real week.

Yvonne is a mother of two living in Switzerland. She founded TellerPlan to make weekly grocery shopping easier for families.
Why the menu plan belongs on the fridge door
The hardest meal of the week is not the most elaborate one. It is the one where you are standing in front of an open fridge at half past five with no idea what to make. Everyone is hungry, the children are right there, and your head has already been emptied by a full working day.
A menu plan makes that decision in advance. You take it once at the weekend, calmly, with the calendar next to you — and then never again. On Tuesday at half past five you look at a sheet of paper and you know. That is the whole trick, and it works every single evening.
Why on paper rather than in your head? Because a plan in your head belongs only to you. A plan on the fridge door belongs to everyone: your partner can see that Thursday is leftovers day. The children can see that raclette is coming on Saturday and stop asking. And whoever gets home first can already put the potatoes on.
Hang the plan where the question actually gets asked — on the fridge, not in a drawer. A menu plan you have to go looking for does not get read.
The printable menu plan template
Here is the template. Page one is blank and waiting for your week: seven days, lunch and dinner, with room at the bottom for notes and for whatever is still in the cupboard. Page two is the same week already filled in — an example of what a realistic family plan looks like.

How to fill the template in
Take fifteen minutes at the weekend and work in this order. The order matters more than it looks — starting with recipes instead of the calendar means planning for a week you are not actually going to have.
- The calendar first, not the cookbook. Mark the days when time is short: football training, parents' evening, a late shift. Those days get something quick later on.
- Then the fixed points. Raclette on Saturday, a roast on Sunday, pizza on Friday — whatever is the same every week in your house goes straight in and never has to be decided again.
- Now the two or three real cooking evenings. No week needs more than that. Put them on the days you have time, and deliberately plan a double batch.
- Set a leftovers day. Thursday works best for most families: whatever is left from the cooking evenings comes to the table here.
- Only then fill the gaps. Soup with bread, a snack plate, a fried egg with rosti. These are proper dinners and they belong on the plan like everything else.
At the end you look at the week and check one thing only: is the same thing on there three times? Does it alternate between meat, vegetarian and fish? If so, you are done. We describe the process in more detail in our guide to creating a weekly plan.
Three rules that make a menu plan survive real life
Most menu plans do not fail at the planning stage. They fail in the week when something gets in the way. These three rules are the difference between a plan that lasts three weeks and one that sticks.
Plan less than you could cook
Seven fully planned evenings are a promise no family week keeps. Plan four or five and deliberately leave two days open. Those open days are not a failure — they are the buffer that saves the rest of the plan when a child comes down with something.
The days are moveable
A menu plan is not a timetable. If you do not fancy the oven dish on Wednesday, swap it with Friday. As long as what you bought gets eaten, the plan is working. People who stick slavishly to the days give up after a fortnight.
Cook once for two evenings
A double batch of mince and pasta on Monday means Wednesday lunch is already sorted. This is not meal prep with stacks of containers and a lost Sunday afternoon — it is just a bigger pan. There is more on this in our post on batch cooking for families.
From menu plan to shopping list
The menu plan is only half the job. It earns its keep when it turns into a shopping list — because then you buy what is on the plan, rather than whatever occurs to you in the shop.
By hand it works like this: go through the seven days, write down the ingredients for each dish, and combine anything that appears more than once. Three recipes with onions make one line, not three. Then sort the list by aisle so you only walk the shop once — that is what our shopping list template is for.
This step is the most tedious part of the whole menu plan — and the only one a computer genuinely does better than you. TellerPlan takes your weekly plan and builds the shopping list automatically: quantities added up, sorted by aisle, on your phone.
The paper template and the app are not either/or. Plenty of families plan at the kitchen table on paper, because everyone can join in, and then have the shopping list on their phone. The plan stays on the fridge, the list goes to the shop.
